Diversity and inclusion are becoming the norm in today’s society. Individuals that previously felt they didn’t have a voice are being given the opportunity to contribute and thrive in work environments, the way it always should have been. The employment rate for ethinic minorities in the uk is only 62.8%. 67.5% of LGBTQ+ employees reported to have heard negative comments, jokes and slurs about the community, leading to over half of LGBTQ+ employees not being open to their supervisors or managers. Lastly among the disabled community in the UK, adults with autism have the lowest employability rate.
However, on the flip side companies with a diverse workforce are 70% more likely to capture new markets and diverse management teams produce a 19% higher revenue. Similarly companies employing similar numbers of men and women can see an increase in revenue by up to 41%, showing customers appreciate diversity and are more likely to gravitate towards companies that are openly working on their diversity and have beliefs that align with their own.
Despite the negative statistics, the positive shows that as society’s mindset changes, the world of business is evolving to keep up. A great example of this is Linkedin. The “Instagram of business” is becoming an inclusive and diverse platform for people to share their work experiences, advice and opinions on all things business. The areas where diversity is lacking are discussed in a constructive way, and advice is given from the professionals. Linkedin shows how times are changing, and even though it seems slow, progress is being made to make sure people from every country, ethnicity, gender, class and sexual orientation have the opportunity to strive for greatness in the workplace.
