May Days
There are so many important dates happening in May, two of which being Eid and Cinco De Mayo. We wanted to celebrate these holidays with you all, but also educate our audience, and ourselves. We’ll be exploring the history and heritage behind Eid and Cinco De Mayo, and why they are so important to those who celebrate them.
Eid
Eid al-Fitr 2022 is on 1st – 2nd of May. This holiday marks the end of Ramadan, the muslim holy month of fasting, and the start of the Shawwal month. It is a time of celebration and spending time with loved ones. Eid originates from the belief that the prophet Muhammad received the first version of the Quran during the month of Ramazan. The holiday is also to celebrate and pay tribute to Allah for providing strength during the fasting season. It is traditional that on this day, muslims congregate at Mosques or open spaces to offer special prayers together. It is followed with celebrations with family, extravagant meals and new clothes.
Cinco de Mayo
Cinco de Mayo is on 5th May, and celebrates the Mexican victory of the French Empire at the battle of Puebla in 1862. This victory provided a much needed moral boost for the Mexican troops, and with the help of American forces, the French were successfully expelled from Mexico in 1866. Not to be confused with Mexican independence day, this holiday is celebrated world wide and showcases the best of Mexican culture, cuisine and history. Some traditions are recreating the battle of Puebla and military parades. The holiday is more widely celebrated in America, to acknowledge Mexican culture and history within the large Mexican populations in the country. However, the holiday is still celebrated in the state of Puebla and other areas of Mexico as well. For Cinco de Mayo, we have released a themed tutorial!
