Tips to Survive a Family Christmas
Christmas is a joyous time filled with creatively wrapped presents, extravagant tree ornaments and a home cooked meal to fill you up until the new year. However, this is not always the case for everyone. Christmas for many people brings up painful memories, or are reminders of difficult situations. If Christmas is a difficult period for you then here are some tips to cope with the festive season.
Lower Your Expectations
There is so much pressure to have the ‘perfect family Christmas’ when in reality no Christmas, or family, is perfect. Don’t feel the need to join in or have fun if you’re struggling. Take some time to yourself to gather your emotions and join in when you’re ready. On the flip side if you’re the organiser of the festive gathering, then do it your way. Do what’s best for you and your family, keep it simple or go all out. If spending hours preparing a large meal is just going to stress you out then do what you can, don’t feel the need to decorate your house head to toe, again, do what you can.
Plan Ahead
Being organised can take a lot of the stress away from the big day. Allow time that you can spend on your own, or with someone you feel comfortable around, have a limited amount of family time together if tension is likely to occur, or plan ahead time slots for cooking Christmas dinner so you can serve a delicious, non crispy, meal. Alternatively, if you’re not a planner then let the day flow naturally and see what the day brings. Eat dinner when everyone’s ready or go on a spontaneous walk, whatever happens, happens.
Set Your Own Christmas Day Goals
Social media is a big pusher of unrealistic expectations of life, especially holidays. If you see posts of family and friends unwrapping presents, playing games or eating a big meal together, don’t feel like you have to achieve the same things. Find joy in what’s realistically achievable for you, whether that’s spending a small amount of time with family, or lending a hand with Christmas dinner, every small thing is worth celebrating!
